What I Packed for California

Last weekend Ryan went to San Diego to present at a conference. Since our anniversary (5 years!) was coming up, I flew out to meet him.

Here’s the thing you need to know about traveling with my husband: be prepared to go on an adventure. What does that mean? Well, two things. First, it means you’re always going to find something really cool. Second (and most pertinent to this post), you need to pack appropriately. For me, that means basically packing everything.

Alas, I departed with a suitcase weighing in at about 44lbs. Here’s a roundup of what I wore and why I loved it.

I made the last minute decision to throw on this long sleeve dress (it has pockets!) for the flight instead of a jumpsuit. I packed my puff sleeve denim jacket in my carry on for an extra layer on the plane, and grabbed my white Dolce Vita sneakers. Both are staples in my closet, so I knew they would be worn multiple times on the trip. Full disclosure, I had just bought the DV sneakers, but I was super excited about them and KNEW they would become staples in my closet.

I landed Wednesday evening, and went straight to dinner with Ryan and his coworkers. I LOVE this O.p.t. smocked dress. It’s the perfect maxi length, my soft autumn colors, and its defined waist is flattering to my hourglass shape. Swapped my sneakers for a dressier pair of Birkenstocks and threw on my jacket again.

Thursday’s weather was chilly and rainy, so we ended up driving to Palm Springs (see, I told ya we would end up going off property). I started out in my favorite cropped flare jeans, a basic tee, and hole knit sweater (read: layers) with my sneakers. I threw a pair of jean shorts and sandals in a day trip bag–the secret weapon when traveling with Ryan–and off we went.

On Friday, we explored La Jolla, Mission Beach, and Coronado (a must if you visit the San Diego area). I paired this mesh knit Varley 1/4 zip with a pair of wider leg ecru cropped jeans (a closet staple for autumns!) and my sneakers again.

We went to Old San Diego for dinner that night, so I opted for a maxi skirt and bodysuit combo with the same brown Birkenstocks from Wednesday. I’m really becoming a fan of a bodysuit for outfits like this because you don’t have to worry about tucking in your top. I dressed the outfit up a bit by adding a headband–never estimate the power of an accessory like that to change the look of the outfit!

We flew home Saturday, so I needed something comfortable. I found this Z Supply sweatshirt over the winter and HAD TO HAVE IT. It’s the perfect color for soft autumns, and I’m a sucker for a good graphic sweatshirt or tee. I ended up wearing my cropped flare jeans again with my sneakers, mainly because I needed to look more put together than I actually felt after a very last minute flight change from United.

The outfits were easy and comfortable every day, but I still felt put together. I am admittedly not the best packer in the world, so I don’t have any hacks for that. But! Here are the two things that made it easier for me:

  1. Everything in my suitcase was in my soft autumn color palette, so I knew I could mix and match if I decided on a last minute outfit change.
  2. I tend to stick to the same “uniform” at home–simple outfits with cropped jeans and a top or sweater. When you know what you like and what works for you, you can effortlessly throw outfits together for any trip. The hardest part for me is always deciding which outfits to pack!

About Me

Hi! I’m Cassie I originally started this account as a way to answer the question, “Twins! How do you do it?!” but those twins I mentioned are starting pre-school in the fall, so I’ll have some free time. A former teacher, I have always loved clothes, putting outfits together, finding a good deal, and picking up style tips. Now that the world is my oyster with this newfound freedom, I’m feeling an urge to explore my creativity in that area. I hope you’ll follow along, and invite your friends!
